Tackling Christmas Shopping

As usual I have left Christmas shopping to the last minute. Once I used to shop in town. I loved visiting the small boutique shops for presents. Hubby & I would spend the morning in town shopping. To celebrate the festive season we would finish with lunch at Grossi Florentino Cellar Bar toasting the joy of completing the shopping with a glass of bubbles.

How life has now changed with Boy. Shopping in town is now difficult. The small shops are not suitable for the baby moving mobile. Trying to find places with ramps or lifts instead of stairs can be a challenge. Sadly my favourite book shop is not accessible with the baby mover.

Instead of town I tackled the shopping with military precision at a big Westfield Centre. I hit the centre at 9am so that Boy could have his morning nap in the pram while I raced around shops ticketing off my shopping list. I am lucky Boy is able to nap. We finished off with coffee at a nice café where I was able to feed Boy his lunch. Then it was time to head home so Boy could have a play & then have his lunch-time nap in his bed. Yeah, it is all over for another year. I am determined it will not be last minute shopping next year & I will also utilise the power of the internet to tackle some of the buying as well.

Does anyone have any tips to cope with Christmas shopping?

“I Don’t Like Mondays”

I never knew Boy was a fan of the Boomtown Rats song. What is it about a Monday? Is he preparing me for the years to come of trying to get him organised for school in the future. Will he suffer Mondayitis when he starts work? It is no different to any other day of the working week in his little world. Mummy is home & Daddy is off to work. However, he is always grumpy, whinge & clingy. I often wonder if it is related to Daddy not being home. He has just had 2 days with Daddy around & then all of a sudden it is back to boring Mummy. Daddy is the “rock star” of his little world. He has known to be crying in my arms & as soon as Daddy walks into the room his face will light up with a smile!!

Once I used to try & keep Monday quite to help establish a routine of good sleep after a weekend. I thought the reason why Boy was grumpy on a Monday was due to sleep problems. At the same time I would clean the house & do the washing. I soon realised he was much happier if we spent time out of the house. Even a walk down to the local café makes Boy happier.

Yesterday was no different. To help cope with the day we went for a short walk to the local supermarket to pick-up a few items I had forgotten when I did the big shop at one of the big 2 supermarkets. In the afternoon I had a coffee with one of the mother’s from the mum & bub group. It certainly helped the day past. It used to be hell when we stayed at home so I could establish a good routine. I remember clock watching & thinking it is only 4 hrs to go until bath-time, 3 hrs to go and so on.

On the upside he was grizzling all day until 5pm. I don’t know what happened at 5pm but he suddenly became happy. Did he sense the “rock star” would be home soon? It did make my life a little easier. He stopped crawling around the house grizzling & requiring me to pick him up for a cuddle & was happy to play by himself while I organised dinner out.

Does anyone have any tactics to cope with a Monday?

Have to start somewhere

I am writing due to the encouragement of a friend who thought my musing of motherhood & life adventures would make a great blog. I am not sure how it will go … will I get bored … will people find this a load of rubbish but the only way to find out is to start typing.

So, who am I? Instead of writing a nice ‘flowery’ description I am going to use the KISS principle.
• 36 year old woman on maternity leave
• 9 month old baby boy who is a dribbler
• Husband who is hard worker
• House owned in partnership with a bank
• 2 dogs (Freddy & Julia)

Yesterday –
We are in the crazy rush to finalise gifts & post to family who live overseas (England). My husband thought it would be nice to send a photo of our son in the cards. In a made dash we went off to Officeworks to produce a photo. We had a 1 hour window before boy needed his lunch & nap. I did not realise husband also wanted to visit an ATM on the way (1st machine out of order) & then had to find another one belonging to the right ‘bank’. This took 20 minutes of the limited window of opportunity we had. He then wondered why I was getting ‘snappy’ as he dawdled in getting the pram out of the car. If boy does not get his lunch & nap on time it throws out the rest of the afternoon. It is not fun keeping a grizzly & clingy baby happy for 5 hours. Plus, I did not want boy to be grizzling this afternoon. It was the Mother’s Group (with fathers) Christmas BBQ gathering.

Most of the Mother’s Group gatherings I have been to boy will grizzle. He will grizzle when another baby touches him, if her burps or regurgitates or just to be held. All of the babies have had a grizzle every now & then but boy just seems to do it on a regular basis. I wanted today to be different because at long last … he seems to be happy now he has found the coordination & strength to crawl. I wanted to be proud that yes ... my son does not cry all the time. I did not want my son to be the wimp or "mummy's boy" of the group.
